Dear Friend, “He died just five days before my 16th birthday. My brother was headed back to college, excited to see his friends again. I joked with him that I was going to take over his room. I didn’t know at the time that he’d never be coming home again.” We listen to their stories; stories of children’s lives devastated by loss and trauma, accidents, illness, suicide, and even murder. These traumas will likely affect them into adulthood, unless they receive the kind of help and support they need. How do they handle their tremendous burden? Since 1999, the CBC has been helping children and their families heal and regain hope when their lives have been shattered by loss. The CBC provides peer support, education, and advocacy for children and teens (preschool through college age), parents, and caregivers in a safe and comforting environment. It is the only center in this area dedicated solely to grieving children. The CBC is free to all Participants. The CBC, a 501(c)(3) organization, is funded entirely by donations. Thanks to the compassion of Friends like you, the CBC has grown from initially serving 8 children to over 300 participants per month. Proceeds from last year’s mailing helped us form several additional groups and provide pizza and cookies for attendees each week. Because we have been fortunate enough to increase the numbers of participating children and their parents, we feel an obligation to raise the necessary funds to meet our growing demands. The annual cost per child at the Bereavement Center is $1,200. Would you consider sponsoring a child to help us meet our goal? I know that some of you have been kind enough to support me in my quest to build this cause. Many of your have joined me at our Spring event “Rockin’ on the Green” and supported us by attending. Your help is important however you choose to offer it, whether it be through donations, attendance or even becoming a group facilitator at the Center. We can always use your help in any way you are able to support us. The date for this year’s “Rockin’ on the Green” will be April 13th at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove. It’s never too early to hold the date. It is a long and difficult process to attempt to rebuild the life of a child faced with the loss of a loved one. Twenty-five percent of all kids will suffer such a loss before graduating high school; for one in five that loss will be one of a parent. With your help we can all be secure that no child will ever have to grieve alone. Thank you in advance, Bonnie Blank
