The mission of the Children's Bereavement Center® is to restore a sense of hope for the future to children and families who have lost a loved one.

 

Directors and Key Staff

Mindy Mindy Cassel, Ph.D., C.T., is Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of the Children's Bereavement Center® (CBC). She is a Licensed Psychologist and Certified Thanatologist. Since 1999, as Executive Director, she oversees CBC's operations, management, strategic planning, financial development, and expansion. Dr. Cassel's professional career in the Miami community spans more than 30 years, during which she has worked with individuals, families, and children in the areas of loss, trauma, rehabilitation, and life transition.

Peter Peter Willig, L.M.F.T., F.T., is Chief Operations Officer for the CBC. He is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Fellow in Thanatology with over 20 years of clinical experience working with individuals and groups, including children, adolescents, couples, and families. Mr. Willig began his work with children/families at Miami Children’s Hospital and has worked with the CBC since its inception. He is responsible for coordination and facilitation of CBC Peer Support Group Services and Orientations, and provides principal oversight of CBC Marketing, the CBC Training Institute, and Community Outreach programs.

Kathy Kathy Kramer, L.C.S.W., C.T., is the Program and Training Director for the CBC. Ms. Kramer has been working in the mental health field for 15 years, 8 of which have been with the CBC.  Prior to coming to the CBC, she worked for the Bertha Abess Children’s Center providing individual and group therapy for students in the Miami-Dade County Public School System. As the Program and Training Coordinator for the CBC, Ms. Kramer implements and supervises all peer support groups for children, teens, young adults and adults.  Ms. Kramer is a principal in the training and supervision of all CBC volunteers, interns and facilitators.  Additionally, she conducts community trainings and presentations and is responsible for current research initiatives exploring the effectiveness of peer support groups on children and adult functioning after loss.

Carol Berns, Psy.D., F.T., is Co-Founder of the CBC. She is a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist and a Fellow in Thanatology who has worked for more than 30 years as a bereavement specialist, crisis intervention consultant, and educator. She has written numerous professional articles and is co-author of The Instructor's Guide to The Last Dance: Encountering Death and Dying, 5th, 6th & 7th editions (McGraw-Hill).

Volunteers
The Children's Bereavement Center® could not operate without its dedicated volunteers. Trained Facilitators offer their time and expertise to assist the CBC's small core staff, volunteering in Peer Support Groups for children, teens, and adults. Other volunteers provide office support, help with fundraising events, and serve on the Advisory Board or Board of Directors.

Children’s Bereavement Center (CBC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (SC-10400) and contributions are tax-deductible under IRS regulations.  The fair market value of goods and services received is $50 per person.
