Dear Friends and Colleagues: It is very rare that I discuss or allow my personal charitable work to be made known to others, rather, I choose to support certain charities without seeking financial involvement from those with whom I consider myself close. Although this continues to be my practice, I have been so moved by the incredible work done for the families of our community through the Children’s Bereavement Center and its wonderful staff, that I feel I am doing you as much of a favor by telling you about their program, as I am by the support I personally provide to the program itself. As you may or may not be aware, the Children’s Bereavement Center is a non-profit program that serves the South Florida community by providing free counseling and bereavement services to children and families that have suffered the death of a parent, brother, sister, child, close family friend or relative. The staff and bereavement counselors meet with those who have suffered such losses in a group setting, through which environment the aggrieved individuals are exposed to others who are experiencing the same sense of devastating loss and with whom the aggrieved can share these feelings. The controlled group interaction fosters a sense of understanding, especially for younger children who have lost a parent or sibling, that they are not alone in their feelings of loss, and encourages them in a positive manner to discuss their feelings openly and comfortably. One of the most moving events I have ever experienced is the annual end of year ceremony where the children and families bring a memento of their departed family member and share the item, as well as what that item means to them, to an audience of attendees made up of aggrieved families, Bereavement Center volunteers and alumni, and Board members. Words alone do not allow me to describe sufficiently the poise, pride, and strength each of the children exhibit when making their presentations. Needless to say, tissues are provided and unashamedly used. I urge each of you to (a) click on the Children’s Bereavement Center website link to learn more about the work being performed by the Center, (b) to please keep the Center in mind when you know of a family that has suffered the loss of a loved one, and (c) consider becoming a financial supporter of the Children’s Bereavement Center by making a donation. In these times of economic stress on all of us, I am hopeful that you can see your way clear to make a donation to help financially support this incredibly wonderful program and organization. Most respectfully yours, Edward I. Golden
The year is coming to a close and you might be considering different tax strategies to give to your favorite charities. You may want to look into your stock portfolios for any highly appreciated stocks and donate them in kind. You may be able to avoid the taxes on the sale and may also get a nice charitable deduction as well. Please consult your Investment professional and your tax advisor to be sure this strategy is appropriate for your individual situation. |
