Dear Friends and Family,
As most of you already know, working with grieving children is a cause
near and dear to my heart. I lost my father when I was eleven years old,
and know first hand how painful it is to lose a parent. Though children
typically show great resilience in the face of grief, the bereavement
period often becomes too overwhelming for any child or family to handle
alone. That's why the work of the Children's Bereavement Center is so
critical. The CBC is the only organization in Miami specifically
designed to give FREE peer support to grieving children and families.
Every Monday night, the CBC offers support groups, organized by age, for
children and parents who have suffered a loss.
I am now going on my third year as lead facilitator of the CBC's Middle
School group. I see first hand every week how our time together provides
relief for the participating children. Together, we talk about our
feelings regarding our specific losses, how they affect our daily lives,
and come up with ideas on how to cope day to day. It's truly amazing to
see how all the children in the group support each other. We are like a
family. I truly believe our time together each week has an impact on the
children's emotional health.
I often wonder how my grieving period would have been different had I
had a place like the CBC to turn to. One of the biggest gifts the CBC
gives to it's participants, is freedom from feelings of isolation that
grieving individuals often feel. At the CBC, everybody feels understood
and safe. I hope that you will take just a few minutes to learn about
the CBC and get involved. In order to continue the important community
work we do, we need your help. Every penny counts. Please support our
efforts to turn lives around after loss.
