Dear Friend, Our youth obsessed culture does a good job of keeping our mortality a secret. We know the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. We are not as familiar, however, with how to cope after the loss of a loved one. The pain and the feeling of isolation, especially for a child, can be overwhelming. The Children’s Bereavement Center and its peer support groups help you know that you are not alone. I write from a unique position as a new Board member. My youngest son and I participated in the CBC groups from 2007 – 2008 after the loss of my beloved husband. What we found was that in discussions with others you begin to work through your feelings – first by listening and then by expressing your thoughts. At some point you start helping others and you realize, in the process, that you are helping yourself. That is the benefit of a group situation as opposed to a one on one format. Death is a part of life and grieving is, too. These services are provided to children and their families for as long as they are needed free of charge. Please help me keep these programs available to those in need. In these uncertain economic times your support is needed now more than ever. Sincerely, Jeanie P. Bonner |
