Becoming involved with the Children’s Bereavement Center has been a tremendously meaningful and gratifying experience. I first became aware of its existence through a casual discussion with Mindy Cassel, the founding Director, and felt an immediate tug at my heart. I wanted to somehow be involved. Having experienced the traumatic loss of my sister at nine, I felt I was prepared with a particular set of experiences and insights. I wanted to help others navigate though and understand their grief. So I became involved – first as a facilitator for six years and now as a Board member. I chose to work only with the adults – this was my wish. I felt that if I could in anyway help to explain what might be going on inside their children’s heads and hearts – to their parents, and help with any insights, that I could be helping to ease a great deal of misunderstanding and needless pain that I experienced as a child. I have watched families come into the program suffering and leave years later with open hearts and a life to look forward to. With the support from donations and grants, our groups continue weekly, free of charge for all participants and are run by volunteers, facilitators who give their time and love to these families. Many of the facilitators are professionals in the health field, while others, like me are “layman” but have life experiences to share. Each year, as difficult as it is to imagine, over 300 families from our community are an active part of the program. Our community is incredibly fortunate to have an organization like the Children’s Bereavement Center – one that is dedicated to the health and well-being of its children and their families who experience loss. I hope that you will join me in getting involved and consider a contribution to the Children’s Bereavement Center. Thank you,Joan Blackman
The year is coming to a close and you might be considering different tax strategies to give to your favorite charities. You may want to look into your stock portfolios for any highly appreciated stocks and donate them in kind. You may be able to avoid the taxes on the sale and may also get a nice charitable deduction as well. Please consult your Investment professional and your tax advisor to be sure this strategy is appropriate for your individual situation. |
